SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Sushi, a staple rice dish of Japanese cuisine, is very popular among Americans.
The dish can be eaten with either raw or cooked fish.
Yelp recently ranked the top 100 sushi spots in the United States, with three local restaurants making the list.
At No. 8, Makai Sushi in Hillcrest placed in Yelp’s top 10 thanks to chef-owner Matthew Oliver and his “incredibly” fresh fish, per the crowd-sourced reviews website.
“The Hawaii native brought ‘amazing talent and flavors‘ and aloha spirit from Kauai, where he operated an acclaimed sushi spot of the same name (on Yelp’s Top 100 lists in 2017 and 2018) until the pandemic sent him seeking bigger opportunities on the mainland in 2021,” Yelp said on its website.
Some of the most popular dishes at Makai Sushi, according to Yelp, include the Cali Sushi Burrito (fresh blue crab, avocado, cucumber, house-made wasabi aioli, and unagi sauce, rolled in soy paper); Hapa Sushi Burrito (all ingredients from the Cali Burrito plus ahi tuna); and Salmon Roll.
Soichi Sushi in the University Heights neighborhood came in at No. 13 on Yelp’s list. Known for its dishes like Toro (select fatty tuna) and Chilean Sea Bass (Miso marinated and grille), the sushi spot also received praise for the setting it offers.
“The indoor dining was very cozy and the bar offered for an intimate experience with the chefs,” Yelper Kannica C. commented.
The last local restaurant to make the list is Yoshino Japanese Deli in Carlsbad at No. 17. According to Yelp reviews, popular dishes include its poke bowls, spicy salmon and seaweed salad.
“This place seriously brings me back to my time in Japan. No frills, nothing fancy just good, cheap rolls to go. Loving the spicy California and the Lahaina. Grab a couple, walk down to the beach and grub,” Yelper Jeremy S. said.
Yelp identified businesses, marked open and with a passing health score as of April 4, in the sushi category and ranked those spots using a number of factors like the total volume and ratings of reviews.
