This New San Diego Café Brings A Fresh Twist To California’s Coffee Scene With A Concept That Stands Out

A new San Diego café pairs global comfort food and fresh pastries with a paid training program that helps women build lasting careers. A San Diego cafe, named Make Cafe, has been introduced to California's coffee scene with a unique concept that incorporates a food and training program that helps refugee and immigrant women build skills for long-term careers. The cafe is part of MAKE Projects, a San Diego nonprofit that started out as Project CHOP in 2016 and 2017. The core mission of the cafe is to help refugee and immigrants build pathways to long-lasting jobs and trainees in a 12-week paid job readiness program. The menu includes dishes from around the world, including Somali flatbread and Syrian specialties, and freshly made pastries. The building behind the building used to house an electric company that produced one of the neighborhood's best-known signs. The restaurant opened in late June 2026 and features a 900-square-foot commercial kitchen for serious training and a 48-seat dining room for 48 people.
