SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego is among the top three California counties with the most motorcycle-related fatal crashes on average, according to California Highway Patrol data.

On Thursday, a fatal crash involving a motorcycle prompted lane closures on State Route 94, and just last Friday, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash in the Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood, according to authorities.

In a transportation injury mapping system created by University of California-Berkeley using data from California Highway Patrol, San Diego placed third after San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties with the highest number of fatal motorcycle crashes from 2021 to 2023.

According to the tool, there were 36 fatal motorcycle crashes in the county that involved alcohol and 92 fatal motorcycle crashes without, leading to a total of 128 between 2021 to 2023.

In addition, a total of 933 motorcycle crashes resulted in severe injury and 2,058 resulted in some other type of visible injury.

In all three counties with the highest number of motorcycle fatalities, however, the number of crashes were lower in 2023 than in either 2021 and 2022.

San Diego reported 42 crashes in 2021 and 51 the following year, but only reported 39 in 2023. Los Angeles, which topped the list, had 128 reported fatal crashes in 2021, 137 in 2022 and then 90 in 2023. San Bernardino also saw a drop — from 58 in 2021 and 60 in 2022, down to 35 in 2023.

CHP encourages all motorcycle riders to sign up for a California Motorcyclist Safety Course, the state’s official motorcycle safety and training program. The 15-hour course is mandatory for riders under the age of 21 but is also recommended to anyone who wants to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their California driver license.
