Guards found Buchanan unresponsive in his cell at Kern Valley State Prison, Buchanan, a 72-year-old member of the Mexican Mafia, was found dead in a California state prison cell. He had been incarcerated since 2004 for kidnapping a convict who was harassing a corrupt prison guard. From behind bars, Buchanan was involved in drug sales, illicit gambling, shakedowns and murder plots in San Diego County. He was deemed a member of a Mexican Mafia in 1989 after stabbing an inmate in a San Diego jail in 1987. Despite not being convicted of the attack, Buchanan spent much of the next two decades in prison for robbery, escape, and other crimes. He maintained a grip over gangs in the South Bay area of San Diego. An FBI informant offered to pay Buchanan "taxes" if he protected the source's methamphetamine business.
