Padres looking to complete first sweep of the season; Athletics have lost four in a row The Padres are seeking their first sweep of the season against the Oakland Athletics, with Jurickson Profar out of the lineup due to a knee injury. Profar's knee gave out on him during batting in the eighth inning against the Athletics, forcing the Padres to replace him with David Peralta. After the game, Padres manager Mike Shildt revealed that Profar had been dealing with tendonitis in his left patellar and was not expecting it to impact his availability too long. Jose Azocar will cover the gap in left field and bat ninth, while Manny Machado will move up to the No. 3 spot. The Padres are currently 36-35, leading on the Giants as the NL's second wild-card team.

The Padres’ Jurickson Profar left the game while batting in the eighth inning against the Oakland Athletics at Petco Park on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

A day after aggravating tendonitis in his left patellar, Jurickson Profar is out of the lineup on Wednesday as the Padres seek their first sweep of the season.

First pitch against the Oakland Athletics is at 1:10 p.m.

Profar’s knee gave out on him on an eighth-inning swing on Tuesday, forcing the Padres to replace him during the at-bat with David Peralta.

After the game, Padres manager Mike Shildt revealed the knee had been an on-going maintenance issue for Profar, one that the Padres’ left fielder wasn’t expecting to impact his availability too long.

Profar was being seen by doctors during clubhouse availability after Tuesday’s walk-off win.

Shildt said he was unsure if the aggravation would require imaging.

“I mean it’s something … he’s dealt with and medically we have a handle on,” Shildt said Tuesday night. “It’s just a matter of how it acts up on him and how he’s going to continue to tolerate it.”

With Profar out, Jose Azocar will man left field and bat ninth and designated hitter Manny Machado, still on the comeback from his hip flexor strain, will move up to the No. 3 spot behind first baseman Luis Arraez and right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., who is carrying a 17-game hitting streak into the game.

Donovan Solano will play third base and bat fourth and Luis Campusano is back behind the plate to catch Michael King.

The Padres are 0-5 in games in which they were looking to close out a sweep.

The team, on the other hand, has been swept twice.

At 36-35, the Padres have a 1½-game lead on the Giants as the NL’s second wild-card team. The Braves, losers of four straight, have a 2½-game cushion on San Diego as the NL’s top wild-card team.

Here is how Oakland (26-43), losers of four straight, will line up for the series finale:

Since debuting last year, the 27-year-old has a 5.83 ERA in 41⅔ innings as a starter and a 6.05 ERA in 41⅔ innings as a reliever. He has allowed three runs — one earned — in 11 ⅔ innings in two starts this year. This is his first appearance against the Padres, who have two hitters with history with Harris:

He has a 1.90 ERA and a .555 opponent OPS over his last four starts. The team has won three of them. King’s only appearance against Oakland was as a reliever in 2022, when allowed a hit and a walk over 1⅓ scoreless innings.

Here is how King has fared against current Athletics:
