UC San Diego joins ARPA-H-funded initiative to launch drug-testing platform for Alzheimer’s disease
As part of a nationwide clinical trials network for Alzheimer's disease, UC San Diego will help coordinate participating clinical trial sites and standardize how studies are conducted across the network. Researchers from the University of California San Diego have joined a federal initiative funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to launch a drug-testing platform for Alzheimer’s disease. The platform will use blood-based biomarkers and a national clinical trial network to test multiple potential treatments simultaneously, with the goal of identifying promising therapies faster. The project will be led by Principal Investigator Rudolph Tanzi, PhD, the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology and director of the McCance Center for Brain Health at Mass General Brigham. The UC San Diego team will coordinate participating clinical trial sites and standardize how studies are conducted across the network. The primary biomarker will be tauer, which can be measured in blood and is associated with Alzheimer‘s disease-related changes. Researchers hope to identify treatments that can intervene before brain damage occurs.
