The feds seized $1.4M from a currency wholesaler. He’s suing in San Diego to stop the practice.
Steven Bailey alleges the DEA and CBP seized the money without due process, in violation of the Fifth Amendment. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents seized over $1.4M from a currency wholesaler, Global Coin Logistics, last Halloween. The company, which specializes in buying bulk U.K. currency at a discount from Mexico and other foreign countries, is suing in San Diego to stop the practice. The federal agents involved in both cases did not make any arrests, and neither seizure has yet resulted in criminal charges. Following the initial seizure, Global Coins Logistics received administrative forfeiture notices from the DEA and CBP indicating they intended to keep the seized cash for themselves. The firm and its owner, Steven Bailey, have filed federal lawsuits in SanDie and Miami challenging the seizures as unconstitutional. They argue that the DEA, CBP, and CBPs have not provided specific legal or factual reasons for their actions and have only vaguely cited federal statutes that cover hundreds of possible crimes.
