A San Diego man has been arrested following a deadly confrontation with a Riverside County sheriff's deputy in Corona, which resulted in the fatal shooting of a woman. The California Department of Justice has now taken charge of the investigation into the shooting, while the Riverside Sheriff's Force Investigations Detail is handling the assault on the deputy, as per a Patch report.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when a deputy tried to make contact with a group of individuals on the 1000 block of West 6th Street, according to authorities. The suspects chose to instead run away, leading to a foot pursuit. A subsequent physical altercation between the deputy and a man from the group, identified as Eric Nourani, escalated when a woman began assaulting the deputy. "The deputy continued to fight off the male suspect, who was attempting to take his firearm", the Riverside County Sheriff's Department stated. The confrontation led to the deputy discharging their weapon, resulting in the woman's death.
Good Samaritans reportedly intervened during the altercation, aiding in the detention of Nourani, who was later taken into custody and lodged in Riverside's Robert Presley Detention Center. Charged with murder, attempted murder of a police officer, and other felonies, Nourani is reportedly being held on a $1 million bail, despite no prior criminal history in Riverside County.
The fatal shooting has now triggered an investigative protocol mandated by AB 1506, which requires that "following notification by local authorities, DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team initiated an investigation", the Department of Justice announced, as per Patch. The woman's identity is yet to be released, pending notification of her next of kin. The deputy involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave, following the departmental policy, and the case is expected to only gain clarity after detailed inquiries by the Department of Justice are concluded.
