Oil and tech money back measure to limit California environmental law

Proposition 45 would ease development of a wide range of projects, including some fossil-fuel facilities and possibly AI data centers. Big Tech companies and California's largest oil and gas well operator, California Resources Corp., are supporting a ballot measure, Proposition 45, which would alter the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) which requires lengthy reviews and public input for infrastructure and other construction projects. The measure would make projects harder to stop or delay if voters pass it in November, making them easier for industrial projects like gas pipelines and data centers. The oil company, which owns thousands of oil wells in the state and is developing technology to capture carbon dioxide from its Elk Hills natural-gas power plant, has spent $1 million promoting Proposition 45. The proposition would benefit businesses behind projects that capture climate-warming carbon dioxide pollution. However, opponents argue that housing and clean energy are not the real agenda behind the measure.
